CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston volleyball team received one first-place vote as it looks to build upon a 21-12 record from 2009 by finishing third in the WVIAC coaches’ poll, released Friday afternoon.
Charleston will build around returning Second Team All-WVIAC setter Katie Williams (Gettysburg, PA / Gettysburg) who will set the tone for outside hitters Emmalee Luther (Fort Pierce, FL / John Carroll) and Chantal Hebron (Lexington Park, MD / Thomas Stone). Luther finished 2009 with the fifth best hitting percentage in the conference at .293, while Hebron totaled 3.26 kills per game to finish third in the WVIAC.
The Golden Eagles will open the 2010 campaign with a cross-country trek to the Alaska-Fairbanks Tournament which begins Sept. 3rd. “Having the opportunity to play in a nationally ranked volleyball tournament over Labor Day weekend, which is being held in Fairbanks, Alaska is truly exciting. This is a wonderful opportunity for our players to experience great competition and from an educational standpoint to visit a remarkable place.” says Coach Bren Stevens.
UC will return home just in time to host its own Invitational Tournament on September 10 & 11, which will feature 16 matches in two days among eight teams. (UC, West Liberty, Belmont Abbey, UNC Pembroke, King, Converse, WV Wesleyan & Bluefield State).
