Box Score - Game 2

CHARLESTON, W.Va.  – The University of Charleston baseball team pounded out 31 hits as the Golden Eagles took both games of a doubleheader against Bluefield State by scores of 12-11 and 12-9, Monday afternoon at Power Park.

Despite homeruns by freshmen Igor Molina (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) and Doug Chance (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) the Golden Eagles were not able to control much of the first contest as Bluefield State took an 11-6 lead into the closing frame.

UC refused to let the Big Blues relax as the Charleston offense came alive in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jim Clarke (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) and Chance began the seventh with singles around a walk to Mike Dahl (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee Senior) to start the UC comeback with the score 11-7. Ryan Hathaway (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) and Ross Easterling (Logan, W.Va./Logan) followed by driving in three-RBIs with back-to-back doubles making the score 11-10. Junior Andrew Armstrong (Washington, Pa./Trinity) capped a 4-for-4 effort by driving in Easterling with a one-out single into centerfield to knot the game at 11-11.

Molina proved to be dangerous with the game on the line for the second-straight series in a row as he came thru in the clutch with a game-ending single to secure the 12-11 victory. Molina provided the game-winning hit on Friday to close a 5-4 win over Ohio Valley.

In the second contest, the Golden Eagles controlled the game from the first pitch as they score a run in every inning except the first. Bluefield State took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, but Charleston responded with four runs in the bottom of the second to hand starter Blake Reta (Amanda, Ohio/Amanda Clearcreek) enough of a cushion to earn his second win of the season.

A four run sixth for the Big Blues pulled the score within 10-9 on UC reliever Matt Maus (Hamilton, Ohio/Stephen T. Badin), but Chance continued to have a big day by spreading the Charleston advantage to 12-9 with a two-RBI triple off the centerfield wall to put the closing runs on the board. Reliever Garrett Bostic (White Sulfer Springs, W.Va./Greenbrier East) closed out the game for the University of Charleston to earn his first save of the season.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, April 7 for a 2:00 pm doubleheader on the road at Wheeling Jesuit.
